20.10.11

Bradford on Avon 9 Frome 10

Lapses of concentration in the early minutes of the last period cost Bradford the chance of a revenge win over Frome. Bradford started badly, conceding a couple of goals in the first two minutes, but levelled at 4-4 and, briefly, led 6-5 towards the end of the third period. Frome then made a rapid recovery to claim a 9-7 advantage and that proved decisive. Andy Ogg and Jon Dare-Williams both scored hat-tricks – D-W’s lob arguably the goal of the season!

Bradford on Avon 12 Weston-super-Mare 11

We are the Champions! Well done to all who took part in an exciting B&W KO Cup final at Bristol University – and particularly to skipper Andy Ogg, who battled away up front and scored all our six goals.
It should be mentioned straight away that the B&W handicappers once again did a brilliant job, producing a perfect finale thanks to a six-goal start in our favour. For much of the game, the handicap seemed generous – our lead (including handicap) at the end of the first three periods was 9-4, 10-6 and 12-8. Then Weston began a recovery, pulling up to 12-11 with almost two minutes remaining. Our noisy supporters (wasn’t it great to have such excellent backing!) were looking extremely nervous at this stage, but somehow we held on to claim the trophy.

Frome II 9 Bradford on Avon 3

With the honourable exception of Clive Milner, who scored two excellent goals, this was an occasion to forget. But good to see Dan Penno and Chris Maslen making their first appearances of the season.

22.09.11

Harlequins 11 Bradford on Avon 12

We did our very best to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory but, yes, Bradford will be in the final of the Bristol & West Handicap KO! A three-goal start for Bradford may have seemed a tad generous but that view was revised when – despite some fine saves by Roger Chapman – Harlequins built a 5-4 lead early in the second quarter. Four Bradford goals in reply – by Jim Robinson, James Bancroft, Jon Dare-Williams and Mike Coppin – then proved crucial as Bradford took an 8-5 lead in the third; then 12-8 with three minutes to go. Easy does it? Not a bit of it. In the space of a shaky minute and a half, Harlequins scored three times, the last with just three seconds to go.

08.09.11

Bradford on Avon 14 Harlequins 12

A welcome revenge win – even if we did our best to throw away a commanding lead in the latter stages. With Andy Ogg (5) and Jim Robinson (4) finding the target at regular intervals, Bradford built a 12-6 advantage. Then, as a man, the team nodded off, allowing Harlequins to win the last period 5-2 and come uncomfortably close to snatching at least a point.

23.06.11

Harlequins 13 Bradford on Avon 5

Nothing to celebrate here! It was probably a good job that we marked Martin Post’s final game with a pitch & putt event the previous evening (not that we’re much cop at that either). This match all went wrong when Jim Robinson, loyally turning out after a dash from Derby to Bristol, was excluded for the game in the second minute! He’s still asking – why?

31.05.11

Cheltenham 27 Bradford-on-Avon (+28) 31

Forty-eight goals conceded in two Bristol & West KO ties so far . . . and we’re in the semi-finals! After triumphing over Bristol Central, Bradford travelled to Cheltenham bolstered by an admittedly generous 28-goal start. After a good first quarter – only 7-2 down! – we lost the next two 15-1 and were in great danger of being overhauled. But with Tim la Touche subbing in goal and Roger Chapman as a very effective, old-style stopper back, Cheltenham were restricted to a paltry five goals in the final period. Congrats to all concerned!

19.05.11

Bradford on Avon 6 Weston-s-Mare 6

From the comfort of 5-2 up at the beginning of the last period, Bradford allowed Weston (in the shape of Bristol Central first teamer Sean Coles) to recover to 5-5. A penalty from Andy Ogg restored our advantage, only for Coles to notch his fourth goal of the final quarter 37 seconds from the end. Bradford missed many chances to take both points and, in the end, were grateful to goalkeeper Roger Chapman for some fine saves.

10.5.2011

UWIC 11 Bradford on Avon 7

UWIC completed the double in a lopsided match in the tiny Cardiff pool. Bradford were 5-2 down in the second period . . . but then levelled the match at 7-7 by winning the third 5-2 (goals by Martin Post (2), Andy Ogg, Mike Garland and Mike Coppin) . . . . only to be outplayed in the final quarter.

07.04.11

Bradford on Avon 9 Exeter II 10

Bradford are developing a habit of making the division’s title challengers battle hard for victory. After the last-ditch defeat at Bath University, we pushed an experienced Exeter side all the way, with Martin Post producing a Man of the Match performance in defence. Bradford recovered from 2-4 to level at 4-4 and then from 4-7 to 8-9 when Andy Ogg netted his fourth goal with little more than two minutes remaining. Exeter scored again shortly afterwards. Mike Coppin’s reply came just too late for Bradford to salvage a point.

31.03.11

Bath University II 7 Bradford on Avon 16

This game was staged at Bradford and was remarkable for three reasons. Eight goals for Andy Ogg, four for Jon Dare-Williams . . . and NO exclusions for either Mike Coppin or Clive Milner, even though both played the whole game. From 3-3 in the early stages, we raced into a 10-3 lead, which ensured a double success for the season.

24.03.11

Bradford on Avon 9 UWIC 16

Oh dear . . . the least said about this match, the better! We led early on but then fell apart and never found any rhythm. Bradford have had some really close encounters with the students in the past, but this time it was different. Our form deteriorated so fast that UWIC managed to score seven in the third period.

14.03.2011

Bradford on Avon 11 Bath University 14

Yet another close match against promotion hopefuls! Bradford recovered from 6-10 down to 9-10 in the third quarter and then, in the last, from 9-12 to 11-12 before conceding two more goals in the final minute. Turning point was probably early on when Bradford led 4-2 and lost the club’s chief egg supplier Mike Coppin in unlucky circumstances – he was excluded for a second time and, while exiting, was struck on the back by the ball, leading to a Bath penalty. At this point, the club’s ‘ancients’ played a brief and inept cameo role before Andy Ogg’s belated arrival restored sanity. Congrats to Jim Robinson – top scorer with six.

10.03.11

Bristol Central 21, Bradford on Avon (+18) 23

Hail Bradford’s Magnificent Seven (or nine, if we count the two old-stagers who flopped into the pool in the final seconds!). Bradford received an 18-goal start in this B&W KO match – fair enough with players like ex-international Nick Hume, scorer of nine goals, in the home team. The BoA full-time seven battled superbly, with Roger Chapman making several fine saves and four-goal Andy Ogg gallantly leading the attack – until ‘mugged’ towards the end and forced out with a bashed nose and black eye. The reward for victory? An away tie with Cheltenham II!

28.02.11

Bath University 8 Bradford on Avon 7

From 5-2 down early in the third quarter, Bradford showed great character to fight back and almost snatch a point in a thrilling finish. The final period started with the sides all square at 6-6. The University scored with little over a minute to go, only for Jim Robinson to equalise 24 seconds from the end. The home side mounted one more attack and scored the winner with just two seconds remaining. Even that wasn’t the end of it – from the restart, Martin Post’s long shot beat the home goalkeeper but rebounded from the crossbar.

24.02.11

Bradford on Avon 19 Bath University II 7

Bradford could hardly have made a more pedestrian start – the students were level at 4-4 early in the second quarter. But once the second period was won 6-1, this was a straightforward affair with goals shared around the whole team.

15.02.11

Exeter II 21 Bradford on Avon 8

Great to see Hugh Gaskell-Taylor back in action for BoA thanks to a break in his Royal Navy training. A weakened Bradford team certainly appreciated his contribution – he scored four of our eight goals in a game that was always going to be tough. Clive Milner scored twice.
